Uptown seafood restaurant gets low inspection score

High-class, upscale seafood restaurant Aquavina, at 435 South Tryon, had the second worst inspection score this week.

One of its big problems was in the bathroom where inspectors noticed there were no paper towels. And at a place called Aquavina, the “aqua” sure was causing problems. The water used to clean dishes is supposed to be at least 130 degrees. In this case, it was just 107.

Aquavina did give us a statement which read, in part, “Once we discovered the problem, we immediately removed the food…we are currently awaiting re-inspection to return to A status.”

For now, though, the restaurant’s score is 76.5.

Bugs, bugs and more bugs. That’s the problem at Los Laureles Mexican Restaurant at 201 Archdale Drive.

On the restaurant’s April 23 inspection, health inspectors observed one employee picking up a roach, then wiping his clothes, and touching the clean plates. Dead roaches were found in drawers. A live one was seen on the countertop. It earned Los Laureles this week’s worst score -- a 76.

The final restaurant on this week’s worst list, Thanh Huong Cafe at 3023 Central Avenue, has been featured on this segment before. Just two months ago, cockroaches were found in the kitchen. This time, the cockroaches were gone, but other problems remained.

Most noticeably, the restaurant was still storing food near newspapers and dirty clothes. It earned Thanh Huong an 82.5.
