A 27-year-old man shot a woman to death in a Charlotte apartment complex this morning, then went to a motel and held police in a standoff for about 30 minutes before killing himself, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded at about 1 p.m. to at a Motel 6 near the intersection of Interstate 77 and Clanton Road, where they had learned Benjamin Odell Wallace was, police said.

Police evacuated the motel and tried to convince Wallace to surrender, but he shot himself, said Officer Robery Fey, a police spokesman. No one else at the motel was hurt.

Police had obtained a warrant for Wallace's arrest after Danasha Sanders, 25, was found shot to death about 10 a.m. in a unit at Boulevard Homes, near the West Boulevard-Billy Graham Parkway intersection. Sanders' youngest child was in the apartment at the time and has been turned over to the county Department of Social Services, authorities said.

Police do not know what may have prompted the shooting or what the nature of the victims' relationship was, said police homicide Sgt. Ricky Robbins.
