  • Make volunteering a family affair (part 2)

Last week I shared with our MomsCharlotte.com readers ways that you and your family can help our village by contributing your time to help those less fortunate. In addition to the questions about volunteer opportunities that I’ve fielded from readers, I’ve also received requests to share the needs of other non-profits with specific needs this holiday season. I hope that you will take the time to talk with your children about going back, but as they say… Actions speak louder...

  • Places for you and your family to volunteer

It’s the time of year that organizations need volunteers and donations the most, and I’m going to speak for myself here, but it’s also the time that I think about how fortunate I am to have a warm place to stay, food to feed my family, and coats to keep out the chill. Yep, I’m lucky. But, unfortunately, a lot of Charlotte families are not. Because this column is titled, “It Takes a Village,” I wanted to share some places in our area where you can help our villa...

  • Progressive preschool education - is it for your family?

If you've been in Charlotte awhile, the first thing you realize is that very few people are actually from here. I mean, of the over 20-set, no one actually hails from the QC. So, the standard question when you meet someone is "Where are you from?" With the understanding that they are not actually gonna say they are from Charlotte. Next on the list from the "getting to know you guidebook" if you're from Charlotte is: What church do you go to? This surprises a lot of people, but it's true...

  • Fix and freeze and print these recipes!

Freezable meals are all the rage on Pinterest. Shoot, they are all the rage in my house. For just a few minutes of extra prep work on a night that I’m already making dinner, I can save an hour in the kitchen in the future. Now, consider making seven batches of the same meal. Sure, it’s a significant amount of extra prep work. But then, what if you traded six of the extra dishes for meals that your friends made? You’d have a week of meals, new recipes to share with your f...

  • Doulas can make a difference in your baby story

Having my firstborn son wasn’t dreamy. I had all of the pains from giving birth coupled with a case of post partum depression and one unbelievable tear. It was something I didn't expect. Before Graham, the word episiotomy was not in my vocabulary. I was healing from that when about a month later I started to spontaneously hemorrhage. It required several surgeries, but eventually, I started to feel better and convinced myself I could have another child. Because of the complications I ha...

  • When should swim lessons start? A Q&A with the owner of Charlotte Aquatics.

In 2011, my son Graham fell in a pond. The adults were about 15 seconds from him, and in those 15 seconds my son flailed and couldn’t figure out how to stand up in the shallow water. That experience convinced me that swim lessons were essential. It hasn’t always been easy to fit the classes in our busy schedule, to get in the water with my youngest, or fighting through the tears with my oldest. But if it prevents them from drowning, it’s worth it. I’ve come to know Kell...
