Here is a county-by-county look at the weather situation today:
MECKLENBURG (2:55 p.m.)
Mecklenburg County Courts are closed today, as are the Charlotte Nature Museum, Discovery Place and the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg.
The City of Charlotte has suspended trash pickup today. Those crews already were working on a one-day delay, due to Monday's observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. City officials say crews will double up on routes Wednesday and Thursday until they are back on schedule.
Roads are mostly wet, with a few slushy spots in the east and southeast parts of the county. Ice is expected to form in those areas later tonight.
There have been no announcements about school openings or closings for Wednesday. Queens University of Charlotte will hold evening classes tonight.
CPCC, UNC Charlotte and Johnson & Wales University are closed, so there are no evening classes there. Johnson C. Smith and Charlotte School of Law opened late this morning.
Matthews officials say there will be no garbage collection today in the town. In addition, all activities at the Matthews Community Center are canceled, as are activities at the Crews Recreation Center.
ANSON (1:55 p.m.)
U.S. 74 is slushy in spots, and secondary roads are slippery. Snow that fell this morning is melting, however.
The Anson County Schools are closed. Anson County offices and the Anson County courts were closed.
BURKE (2:10 p.m.)
Secondary roads are slippery, but Interstate 40 is reported to be in good shape.
CABARRUS (2:00 p.m.)
Interstate 85 is in much better shape than it was this morning, when there was a multi-vehicle wreck earlier this morning in the northern part of the county.
The Cabarrus County Schools are closed, as is Cannon School.
Cabarrus County Meals on Wheels is not operating today.
All branches of the Cannon Memorial YMCA closed at 2 p.m. today.
CALDWELL (2:10 p.m.)
The Caldwell County Schools are closed. Secondary roads are ice-covered in spots, but main routes are in good shape.
CATAWBA (2:10 p.m.)
About 2 inches of snow is on the ground -- but from a system that affected the area Monday night, not from this morning's system. Either way, it means slippery roads, especially on the secondary streets.
Interstate 40 is in good shape.
The Catawba County, Hickory City, and Newton-Conover school systems are closed, as is Catawba Valley Community College.
Catawba Home-Delivered Meals will not operate today.
CHESTER, S.C. (2:55 p.m.)
About 2 inches of snow have fallen, but road conditions are improving this afternoon, with most thoroughfares merely wet. Secondary roads have some icy spots.
York Tech's branch in Chester has canceled evening classes.
State offices in the county opened at 1 p.m.
CHESTERFIELD, S.C. (3:00 p.m.)
The Chesterfield County Schools will open on a two-hour delay Wednesday.
The Chesterfield County courts are closed today.
CLEVELAND (7:35 a.m.)
The Shelby area was not affected by the storm. Schools are opening on a two-hour delay. Gardner-Webb University and Cleveland Community College are open.
GASTON (9:20 a.m.)
Very little snow fell, and roads are mostly wet. Gaston Christian and Gaston Day schools are closed, but the Gaston County Schools were open.
Interstate 85 is wet, and other major roads in the county also are wet.
IREDELL (7:25 a.m.)
About 1 inch of snow is reported in the southeast part of the county, and some snow accumulated in north and west Iredell -- from a storm system which affected the area Monday night. Interstates 77 and 40 are reported to be mostly wet, with some icy spots in western Iredell on I-40.
The Iredell-Statesville and Mooresville schools are closed.
LANCASTER, S.C. (2:55 p.m.)
City and county offices are closed. So are all states offices in the county.
USC-Lancaster has canceled evening classes.
LINCOLN (9:30 a.m.)
Initially, Lincoln County was spared any snowfall. But a band of snow crossed the county after daybreak. As a result, the Lincoln County Schools have shut down for the day.
Roads are mostly in good shape, although some slippery spots were being reported after 9 a.m.
MONTGOMERY (2:10 p.m.)
Montgomery Community College has called off evening classes. Roads remain slippery in spots.
RICHMOND (2:15 p.m.)
Heavy snow fell intermittently this morning and early this afternoon. Police report roads are snow-covered, but conditions are improving.
The Richmond County Schools were closed today, as were the county courts. Richmond Community College is closed.
ROWAN (2:15 p.m.)
About 2 inches of snow is reported in the county, especially southeast of Interstate 85. Secondary roads are slippery.
The Rowan-Salisbury Schools are closed, as is Rowan-Salisbury Community College.
Salisbury city offices are closed. Also closed is the East Rowan YMCA.
STANLY (2:55 p.m.)
The Stanly County Schools will be closed Wednesday. It will be a teacher workday.
The Stanly County YMCA will close at 7 p.m.
UNION (2:15 p.m.)
Up to 4 inches of snow has been reported, especially in the Waxhaw area. U.S. 74 is slush-covered in spots, and secondary roads are snow-covered and slippery. U.S. 601 is snow-covered in spots, especially south of Monroe.
Other state routes -- N.C. 218, N.C. 200 and N.C. 205 -- are partially snow-covered to the south of Monroe.
The Union County Schools are closed, as is Union Academy and Lake Park Academy. So is South Piedmont Community College.
Union County government offices are closed. They originally had planned to open two hours late, but that has changed.
YORK, S.C. (2:20 p.m.)
Schools are closed today -- Clover, Fort Mill, Rock Hill and York. Also closed is Winthrop University. York Tech has called off night classes.
Several bands of heavy snow have moved through the county during the last two hours. Before that, the National Weather Service reported about 3 inches of snow on the ground.
Roads are not good, according to police. Interstate 77 has some slushy spots, especially in the less-traveled lanes. Major state and U.S. routes are mostly wet, with some slushy spots. Secondary roads are snow-covered.
The public library system is closed today. Rock Hill Municipal Court is closed today, as are all state offices.
