COLLEGE PARK, Md. Eighth-ranked Duke women’s lacrosse team held top-ranked Maryland to five goals in the first 25 minutes, but ultimately fell 14-9 in the NCAA quarterfinals Saturday. Trailing 14-5 midway through the second half, the Blue Devils (14-6) closed the gap with four straight goals, but couldn’t get closer.

With her career on the line last weekend, senior Makenzie Hommel, Duke’s leading goal scorer, was forced to follow her team’s progress in the NCAA women’s lacrosse tournament from her couch in Durham following a concussion April 25. This weekend she will be with her team – with hopes of playing – when they take on No. 1 Maryland.

North Carolina women’s lacrosse coach Jenny Levy predicted that draw controls and possession would dictate the outcome of the Tar Heels’ NCAA quarterfinal meeting with Virginia. She just didn’t know they would decide it in the game’s opening minute.
