“We're surrounded by good pictures. It's just that we don't see them.” That's where Byron Baldwin comes in. After 30 years teaching photography at Myers Park High School, he now does the same at Central Piedmont Community College. His goal: opening students' eyes to the world around them. Sure, he's proud of the ones who have gone pro – such as Preston Gannaway, Myers Park Class of 1996, who recently won the Pulitzer Prize in feature photography. But no matter what his students do with their lives, he says, training their eye is good for them. “I had a student once tell me, ‘I use my photography every day. But I rarely touch a camera.'”
