Debbie, 55, would never have met Salvador, 51, if not for a tornado-like storm.
The thunder: I was working second shift at the Magnavox plant in Fort Wayne, Ind., in June 1977. The building had no windows, but as I looked down a long aisle at the employee exit, I noticed the sky had turned a color we called Indiana Tornado green. It was raining so hard we had to put buckets under the spots where the roof was leaking. The thunder was awful. I decided to ask the next person I saw come walking down the aisle if they had any news about the weather.
The teeth: Salvador came walking by. He worked first shift and was getting ready to go home, but had decided to walk clear to the other end of the factory hoping the storm would let up. He had never been on my side of the factory. When he walked by, I asked him about the weather. He had the brightest, whitest teeth I had ever seen, and chatted with me for almost 45 minutes until my manager ran him off.
The drinks: The next day the plant closed for summer vacation, so I didn't see Salvador for two weeks. When we came back to work, I called and asked him out for a drink. We started dating and got married in January 1978.
The years: Life has been good. We have three daughters, a 3-year-old granddaughter and now own our own mom-and-pop real estate company in Charlotte. We celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary this year and look forward to many more. Kathy Haight
