Meeting focuses on Switzerland's art, culture
On Tuesday, the Magellan Travel Club will feature the art and culture of Switzerland, 7 p.m. in Room 203 of the Fellowship Hall at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1000 E. Morehead St.
With the January opening of the Bechtler Art Museum uptown, the focus of the meeting will be the art and culture of Switzerland and will offer insight to the vision of Swiss art benefactor Andrea Bechtler. Switzerland is renowned for its art collections and scenery. The club will discuss this and offer a DVD presentation highlighting some of the hidden art treasures that can be discovered throughout Switzerland.

Cucalorus celebrates art of filmmaking
The 15th annual Cucalorus Film Festival is returning to Wilmington with an impressive list of independent films, Nov. 11-15, to be screened at various venues in the Downtown and Midtown areas.
The festival will screen more than 130 films, including 35 full-length documentary and narrative feature films and more than 100 shorts. More than 70 filmmakers from the U.S. and abroad will attend. Guest filmmakers will share insights into their films during question-answer sessions following the screenings. There will be other panel discussions and workshops.
In honor of its Carolina roots, Cucalorus is focusing on Southern storytellers and their visions. Feature-length films with strong Tar Heel ties include "Mississippi Damned" (produced by Morgan R. Stiff of Raleigh), "The Good Soldier" (starring N.C. Vietnam veteran Perry Parks) and "In/Significant Others" (directed by John Schwert of Charlotte). Have what it takes to earn gingerbread glory?
The Grove Park Inn & Spa has announced entry guidelines for its 17th annual National Gingerbread House competition. Contestants may deliver their gingerbread houses, to be displayed in the Grand Ballroom, 2-8 p.m. Nov. 15 and 7-8:30 a.m. Nov. 16 (the day judging will occur).
Judging will take place in adult and youth categories. Entries are judged on overall appearance, originality/creativity, difficulty, precision and consistency of theme. The event is free and open to the public. Awards will be presented at 5 p.m. Nov. 16. The grand prize winner gets $3,000 cash, a two-night Club Floor stay at The Grove Park Inn & Spa Resort with dinner for two and breakfast daily. All contestants will receive a personalized certificate.
All entries will be on display Nov. 18-Jan. 3. The public is invited to view the displays 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Details: www.groveparkinn.com.
