DINING - MYRTLE BEACH
Big Daddy's Roadhouse Grill
The scene: 1610 S. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach. Hours: 4-10p.m. daily. Details: 843-448-3819.
The taste: Plenty of folks, including me, like to eat where prices are fair and servings are filling.
Big Daddy's Roadhouse Grill is such a place. It is kind to those of us on budgets and just as kind to those of us who have no idea what budgets are.
Better yet, the food is good.
Prime rib, Danish baby back ribs, grilled chicken and shrimp Alfredo are among the choices. I chose the teriyaki grilled chicken and a side of scalloped potatoes. I was shocked at how large my chicken breast was. It was dinner portion size at a lunch price of $6.99.
Grilled to perfection, it was juicy and flavorful. The scalloped potatoes reminded me of homemade recipes I've had in the past, with a wonderful balance of buttery flavor and cheesy goodness. If I had known how large the portions were going to be, I wouldn't have ordered a garden salad as an appetizer.
Regulars admonished me for not trying the steak and the baby back ribs, but I wasn't in the mood for beef or pork.
I was quite pleased with my choice of teriyaki grilled chicken, and I will try the filet mignon tips during my next visit. It is also an early-bird special priced at $8.49.
As long as you are seated by 6 p.m., you are privy to the early-bird prices. Can't get there for early-bird? The regular menu is still affordable and varied.
Appetizers include fried oysters (Cajun or regular) for $8.99 and tumbleweed - their version of a blooming onion ($6.49).
Burgers, sandwiches and steaks, of course, are featured prominently on the menu as well. The Three Alarm burger (4.99) combines melted pepper Jack cheese, jalapenos, chipotle mayo, lettuce, tomato and onions.
Steak choices include a 20-ounce T-bone ($22.99) and a 14-ounce New York strip ($18.99). If you want to save a few dollars, choose the 10-ounce sirloin that costs $12.99.
Desserts make their presence known here, too, with chocolate cobbler, pecan pie and key lime pie among the stars. They are all $4.95.
There is a kids' menu with adorable names for traditional fare, including buzzard fingers (chicken strips) and a prairie dog (corn dog), both of which are $4.99.
To drink: One of the biggest crowd pleasers is the $3 margaritas, which are served until closing.
There is a full bar available that includes draft beer. For happy hour, there are $1.50 drafts from 4 to 7 p.m. A full wine list is also available. House wines start at $3.99 per glass.
The prices: Prices range from $3.95 (Big Daddy's special hushpuppies appetizer) to $22.99 (T-bone).
