Done in by cell phone

Seen “Dark Knight”? Cell phone info is used to spy on a city and catch a clown with poor social skills. Turns out cell phone forensics is big business, with new devices being used by law enforcement agencies all over the country. CelleBrite's UFED (Universal Forensic Extraction Device) can extract all data (including data criminals have erased) from cell phones and PDAs within minutes. And that info can be used in court. The company says the device has been purchased by Char-Meck PD and many other agencies here and nationwide.

Traveling pants

Ross Saldarini, co-founder of Mountain Khakis, is heading from Charlotte to Salt Lake City for the bi-annual Outdoor Retailer show. Saldarini and his team will show national retailers their new spring products. These are said to be comfy and rugged pants – and here in Khaki Land a way to be both sartorially safe and outdoorsily hip. www.mountainkhakis.com

Power in our pockets

Francis Shepherd, senior systems engineer at Apple, talks mobile Internet marketing at a cocktail soiree Aug. 13 at Dilworth Neighborhood Grille on Morehead. Look, the computers in our pocket are not going to get slower and dumber, as top trend-spotter Walker Smith of Yankelovich marketing in Chapel Hill told me. Shepherd is a regular talking tech head at conferences, workshops and media events around the country. His host: Charlotte chapter of American Marketing Association. www.Charlotteama.com.

What are they doing this summer?

Jim Courier , nice guy tennis stud who stops here in September for the Championships at the Palisades, has been to Prague, the Bahamas and on tour with friends R.E.M.

The Avett Brothers – our own mix of bluegrass and hard rock – are out in California making their new record with hotshot producer Rick Rubin twisting the dials in the studio. He's one of the heads of Columbia Records and has worked with everyone from Johnny Cash to Linkin Park.

Bill Staton – who manages HUGE bucks for important people with his Staton Institute – is leaving Aug. 8 to travel to the Amazon with a small group of researchers to trade ideas with a small village in the rainforest.

Jim Turner , Duke Energy biggie, spent part of his summer vacay at nuclear reactor technology training at MIT. “The most important thing I learned is not to tell people what I learned – they start avoiding you like the plague.”
