Quarterback controversies used to be played out on sports-talk radio and at the water cooler. But Panthers fans have been bashing Jake Delhomme all over Facebook and other social media. As we head into Week 2 of the NFL season, you can bet more than just the refs' whistles will be tweeting.
Here are the best football items from the social media playbook:
You might be too late for the two most talked-about notes of the week. Jake was up for sale on Craigslist in a mock ad. ("Loyal. Needs a loving home.") And YouTube featured a satirical video of Steve Smith supposedly applying ether gas to Jake. Both posts have been pulled down. Poor Jake, does he really deserve this abuse?
You can hear Steve Smith's genuine frustration in an NFL video in which he is "miked up" during the Philly game. The final conversation with Delhomme is very telling. bit.ly/oZcqd.
There are four Facebook groups calling for Delhomme to be replaced, including Jake Delhomme MUST GO!! with 220-plus members. bit.ly/12Kudh.
Meanwhile, there is an A.J. Feeley Bandwagon! page with 35-plus members. bit.ly/ebTS0.
There was a furious in-game conversation last week on Twitter. Check #Panthers to get in on the Twitter huddle this week or tweet #falcons to sneak onto Atlanta's sidelines.
Not in a fantasy football league yet? Facebook has one that you can view right on your page, with drafts still going on all the time. More than 884,000 people play Fantasy Football 2009, and it's a reputable app with Sports Illustrated and Citizen Sports behind it. Do a search on Facebook to find it.
The Carolina Panthers Fans application is very popular in Charlotte, with more than 9,300 monthly users. (Search Facebook.)
And you can friend the TopCats, which sounds fun to me. (Search Facebook.)
Our "best of" college football app in the Carolinas has to go to the South Carolina Football Fans application, with a staggering 47,000-plus monthly users. Way to click, Gamecocks! This lets you taunt your opponents on their wall with trash talk that includes the USC logo. Wait, Gamecocks fans wouldn't do that, would they?
