Sculptor Paul Sires is crazy about stone.
He loves its polished surfaces, contrasting colors, how it can be cut into bold shapes. “Homage” at the Center of the Earth Gallery honors his great predecessors, Constantin Brancusi and Isamu Noguchi. When he came to Charlotte 25 years ago, Sires worked with clay. More than a decade ago, he switched to stone, mostly granite. Much of his time has gone into public art commissions, such as the benches at Time Warner Cable Arena.
So this show is a chance to catch up with him.
There's a slab of pinkish granite cut by swirling curves. An elongated “Homage to Brancusi” recalls the master's iconic “Bird in Space” series.
Some of the pieces are laminated, with alternating layers in different colors. Rough patches on the bases let the stone “speak.”
Sculpture exhibits are relatively rare in Charlotte. This one is worth a visit.
