Burke County man dies in golf cart accident

The body of a Morganton man was found Friday at the bottom of an embankment near his home after apparently lying undetected for several days.

According to a state trooper's investigation, Mark Anthony Marcantel, 46, was traveling north on Burkemont Road in a golf cart when he lost control of the vehicle, said 1st Sgt. Greg Duckworth with the N.C. Highway Patrol.

A man walking along Burkemont about 6:15 p.m. Friday saw the body and called police, Duckworth said.

A trooper's investigation concluded that Marcantel had been driving the cart late on the night of Aug. 5 and was traveling too fast in a curve, Duckworth said. The golf cart ran off the right side of the road and rolled down the embankment. Marcantel was thrown from the vehicle before it came to rest.
