Red Roof helps with gas

If you can pull off a trip to the beach by Sept. 1, you can get a deal on gas money.

Red Roof Inns is offering credits when you stay at certain beach-area properties by that date. Spend three consecutive nights and get a “gas” credit for $25; spend four consecutive nights and the credit is for $50. When you check out, that amount will be taken off your bill.

The offer is good at Red Roof Inns in Myrtle Beach – as well as in Wilmington, Hilton Head Island, S.C., Virginia Beach, Va., and at the Virginia Beach-Norfolk airport. (It's also good at locations in Palm Harbor and Panama City, Fla., and Sandusky-Milan, Ohio, near Lake Erie).

The taste: Chicken burgers might just replace the beef burgers in my life, and Red Robin deserves some of the credit.

The eatery sells burgers with toppings not typical at better-known national chains. Grilled pineapple, mango mayonnaise and pepper-jack cheese, along with lettuce and tomato, adorn a juicy, spicy chicken breast for the Jamaican Jerk'd Chicken Burger. It is served on a jalapeno corn meal kaiser roll. Wheat buns and lettuce wraps are also available for burgers.

All of Red Robin's gourmet burgers come with all-you-can-eat steak fries, and burger lovers have a wide variety of choices.

The Whiskey River BBQ Chicken Burger pairs crispy onion straws with melted cheddar cheese atop a chicken breast in signature barbecue sauce. The Guacamole Bacon Burger features homemade guacamole, three strips of hickory-smoked bacon, Swiss cheese and basics, including onion, tomato and lettuce.

In addition to chicken and beef burgers, Red Robin has appetizers, desserts, salads, soups and entrees.

Guacamole, Salsa & Chips is an appetizer of corn tortilla chips and Red Robin's jalapeno-cheese flour tortilla chips.

There is also a kids' menu that includes Cheesy Mac N' Cheese and Chick-Chick-Chicken Fingers.

To drink: Blueberry Pomegranate Limeade, Coca-Cola products and alcoholic beverages are served. Mixed drinks start at $6.99.

The place: 257 Willbrook Blvd., in Mingo at Litchfield Shopping Center, behind the Piggly Wiggly Shopping Center. Hours: Restaurant and brewery open 11 a.m.-midnight Sunday-Thursday, to 2 a.m. Friday-Saturday. Details: 843-237-7010.

The vibe: The space is open and the interior is covered in light wood. There's a deck out back for dining by the water and a dock with a comfy couch.

The crowd: On a recent Monday night, the crowd was varied, though it seemed to be an older set.

The drink/the taste: Happy hour is 4-7 p.m., but in the bar, it extends to 11 p.m. on Mondays. Quigley's fresh ales and lagers come in a Nip (8 ounces) for $2, happy hour $1.50; a Real Pint (16 ounces) for $4, happy hour $2; and a Big Beer (20 ounces) for $5, happy hour $4. They also offer domestic, imported and nonalcoholic beer.

Growlers (64-ounce jugs) to go are available at $11; refills are $8. Quigley's also features a selection of wines, single barrel bourbon, single-malt scotch, cognac, port and sherry.

Appetizer standouts include the Low Country Roll – shrimp, grits, sausage and caramelized onions rolled in seaweed, battered and fried, served with sauce – for $8.50 and the Spicy Pimiento Cheese, a mix of four cheeses, chipotle and pimiento, with chewy bread, for $5.50.
