The annual battle between the men's basketball teams at Davidson and Charlotte for the Hornets' Nest Trophy will take a two-year hiatus, the Observer has learned.

The move brings a temporary halt to the 29-year rivalry between Mecklenburg County's Division I colleges. The 49ers lead the series 26-10 and won the most recent meeting, 75-68, last season at Halton Arena.

The annual game is set to resume in the 2010-11 season with a game at Davidson, sources said. The next season the game would return to Charlotte's Halton Arena.

The 49ers are close to naming a replacement for the Davidson game. Sources said the school is working on a deal to play at Big East member Villanova on Dec.19.

Athletics directors of both schools agreed on Aug.16 to play this season's game on Dec.13, but Chattanooga released its 2008-09 schedule Thursday which included a game Dec.13 at Davidson, throwing this season's game in doubt.

At that time the schools also agreed in principle to a four-year deal to continue playing the game. That agreement remains in question.

An official announcement of the two-year hiatus is expected any day.
