CINCINNATI Offensive tackle Willie Anderson and running back Rudi Johnson lost their starting jobs with the Cincinnati Bengals during training camp. Now, they've lost their roster spots, too.
The Bengals released Anderson and Johnson on Saturday as part of their moves to get to the 53-man roster limit.
Cornerback Deltha O'Neal, who also had lost his starting job, and linebacker Ahmad Brooks were among the players waived or released. Jeff Rowe was waived, leaving Jordan Palmer – the younger brother of starter Carson Palmer – as the No.3 quarterback.
Anderson, 33, was the most tenured Bengal, having played 12 seasons in Cincinnati. Injuries limited him to seven games last season, ending his streak of four consecutive Pro Bowl appearances. He became a backup to Stacy Andrews in training camp, and declined to take a pay cut Saturday.
Johnson, 28, missed most of camp because of a hamstring injury, making him expendable. Chris Perry, a first-round pick in 2004, moves into the starting job.
Elsewhere
ARIZONA: Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Kurt Warner would be the starting quarterback over Matt Leinart in the season opener.
ATLANTA: The Falcons cut quarterback Joey Harrington and offensive guard Kynan Forney. The decision to cut Harrington, who opened the 2007 season as the starter, leaves D.J. Shockley as the team's No.3 quarterback behind starter Matt Ryan and Chris Redman.
DALLAS: For now, the Cowboys have 11 defensive backs, 11 offensive linemen and two healthy receivers – Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton.
Receivers Sam Hurd (left ankle) and Miles Austin (sprained right knee) definitely won't play in the season opener, and might be out longer. Isaiah Stanback (dislocated shoulder) hasn't been ruled out for opener, but is unlikely to play.
The Cowboys put seven-time Pro Bowl offensive guard
Larry Allen – signed to a one-day contract for the purpose of retiring as a Cowboy – on the reserved/retired list.
HOUSTON: The Texans put running back Chris Brown on injured reserve. Brown, a free agent who signed in March, has struggled with back problems since the beginning of training camp.
INDIANAPOLIS: Reserve quarterbacks Jared Lorenzen and Quinn Gray were cut, a sign Peyton Manning and backup Jim Sorgi are on the mend.
NEW ENGLAND: Running back Kevin Faulk was suspended by the NFL for the opener for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
NEW YORK JETS: Running back Jesse Chatman was suspended without pay for the team's first four regular-season games for violating the league's steroids and related-substances policy.
NEW YORK GIANTS: The biggest move the Super Bowl champions made on cutdown day was an addition – the signing of kicker John Carney, 44.
The fifth leading scorer in NFL history, Carney was signed to handle the kicking until Lawrence Tynes recovers from a knee injury suffered in training camp.
PHILADELPHIA: Defensive end Jerome McDougle, the former first-round pick, was among 12 players released. McDougle had a solid preseason, finishing with a team-high 21/2 sacks. But that wasn't enough for the Eagles to keep him. McDougle has just three sacks in 33 games.
PITTSBURGH: If starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger goes down this season, it will be Byron Leftwich – not Charlie Batch – who replaces him. Batch, who broke his collarbone during the first exhibition on Aug.8 and later needed surgery, was put on the injured reserve and will miss the season.
Leftwich, the former Jacksonville and Atlanta quarterback, signed with the Steelers two days after Batch was hurt.
SAN FRANCISCO: The 49ers released underachieving receiver Ashley Lelie. He signed a two-year, $4.3million deal last year, including a $2million signing bonus, but he made little impact on his third NFL team. Lelie had just 10 receptions for 115 yards last season while struggling with injuries.
TENNESSEE:Jeff Fisher had warned Roydell Williams that the Titans needed to see the receiver on the field and working through his injuries. Williams' effort wasn't enough to keep his spot on the roster. Williams, who had 55 catches last season, shared the team lead in receptions with Justin Gage and he was second with 719 yards receiving. But he had struggled since breaking an ankle days before Tennessee's playoff game last January.
The Titans signed Gage to an extension in February and brought back receiver Justin McCareins in March, a duo that will be their starters in the opener against Jacksonville. Brandon Jones, whose season was cut short by a groin injury last year, has been the slot receiver this preseason.
