South Mecklenburg's Tim Palmer became the 14th player in Mecklenburg County history to rush for at least 290 yards in a game. He set a school record with 292 yards in Friday's 49-18 win against Waddell. The county's 290-yard rushing performances have all been since 2000.
China Grove's Carson High broke a 22-game losing streak Friday, beating North Rowan 36-0. It was the first win in the school's three-year history.
Wilmington Hoggard, the N.C. 4A champion, went to N.C. 4AA champion New Bern Friday and won 28-16. Hoggard, which also beat New Bern in 2007, is coached by former Olympic coach and West Charlotte assistant Scott Braswell.
The state's top five teams look like Independence, Hoggard, Greensboro Dudley, Butler and Raleigh Millbrook.
What has happened to Victory Christian? Loaded with a bevy of Division I talent, the Kings have lost to a new school with no seniors (Northern Guilford) and to a rebuilding Providence Day team. In two games, the Kings have scored 19 points. It's not too late to make the championship run they planned, but Victory needs to get it together .
