Look up – ceilings can inspire feel

Soaring more than two stories above, accent lighting reflects along off-white planks and thin slats of wood to create the illusion that this cathedral ceiling is floating above the great room below. Interior windows on the second floor are cased with identical wood for a cohesive look that draws the eye upward.

This theme recurs in the bedroom, but with a twist. Here, the room's square dimension and ceiling fan give the ambiance of a luxurious, tropical retreat. Above the bed, painted palm trees appear to sway in an ocean breeze.

Above this gracious white-on-white formal sitting room, this ceiling's simple unadorned beams take a color cue from the hardwood floor below. Accent lighting picks up the shimmer of the polished wood, making it appear like satin.
