Cooking classes are everywhere

As interest in all things culinary has grown, there has been an increase in the popularity of cooking classes.

While Johnson & Wales offers wonderful Chef's Choice cooking classes, many people find them to be difficult to get into and prohibitively expensive.

The popularity of these type of classes though has caused other more accessible and affordable options to spring up.

Whether you are a serious chef looking for a new trick or a novice looking for a good time and good food, these classes cover all the bases.

With the recent onslaught of high-end grocers, each one is looking to separate itself with amenities.

The Fresh Market (4223 Providence Road; offers monthly in-store cooking demos that last about 30 minutes The classes are free.

Participants get to sample the prepared dish at the end.

Restaurants have also begun offering cooking classes, most notably Blue (214 N. Tryon St.) and the restaurants of the Harper's Group.

Blue's classes are led by their executive chef, Gene Briggs, and are $39.95 a person. Each month the class focuses on a different topic or cuisine.

Harper's Restaurant Group utilizes several of their restaurants for monthly cooking classes: Mimosa Grill (327 S. Tryon St.); Zink (201 N. Tryon St.); Arpa (121 W. Trade St.); and Upstream (Phillips Place). Each class is two hours and $35 a person.
