Sip of the week

2007 Bellini Vernaccia di San Gimignano,

Rufina, Italy, $10.99.

As summer fades, we still have plenty of time to enjoy an easy-to-drink white wine that can still handle a little bite of cool evenings. Time to turn to Italy's vernaccia. This has unusual color – gold with the slightest hint of pink. On the first sip, it seems like a simple summer sipper with gentle flavors of pear and melon. But the aftertaste brings a hint of spiciness that keeps it interesting. Just the thing we need as we move from one season to the next.
