Charlotte Catholic's Donnie Smith was monitoring the internet and his cell phone Monday night, hoping to get a score from the Lake Norman-Mooresville soccer game.
Mooresville, No. 10 in the state 3A poll, upset No.1 Lake Norman 2-0. That meant all No.2 Charlotte Catholic had to do to move up to the top spot Tuesday was stop Olympic on the Trojans' home field.
Just a week ago, Olympic was ranked No.3 in the state behind Lake Norman and Catholic.
“I was excited when I heard about (the Lake Norman score) to tell you the truth,” Smith said after scoring twice in Catholic's 3-0 win. “We've never been this far. It's always been Lake Norman in front of us. I have no doubt Lake Norman is still going to come out like they're No.1, but this feels good right now.”
The poll won't come out until next week, but Catholic can walk around, at least for a few days, knowing it's the top-ranked 3A team. The Cougars (6-0, 1-0 Queen City 3A) outshot Olympic 8-1 in the first half and 16-7 for the game.
Smith scored with seven minutes, 52 seconds left in the first half and Joe Wirth scored with 21:29 left to play to seal the game. Smith's third goal came in the final two minutes.
Olympic (3-3-1, 0-1) hasn't won since Aug. 23 and is 0-3-1 in that span. Catholic got its fourth shutout of the season and has outscored opponents 28-2. But the Cougars' unofficial run atop the polls might be brief.
Catholic will play at 4A South Mecklenburg (5-2) Saturday in a nonconference rivalry game between schools that are across the street from each other. New Cougars coach Oscar Del Pino said his team hasn't beaten the Sabres in three years. South Meck beat Olympic 2-1 last week.
“We have a lot of work to do,” Del Pino said. “We have to maintain our composure for an entire match and work better together. We've got to get better.
“We know Saturday's a tough game and our conference is no cake walk. Regardless, we have to play (Olympic) twice.”
The rematch is Oct. 1 at Catholic.
