They'll zip around for charity

Powerboats will help raise money for Make-A-Wish

HUNTERSVILLE Lake Norman folks can see some rare machines this week and help a good cause, too.

The “Puttin on the Wish” charity ride Friday kicks off a weekend of events designed to give local residents a glimpse of some unique and powerful motorboats. It also raises money for the Make-A-Wish foundation.

Friday's charity ride will feature at least 10 powerboats, some worth more than $1 million, giving rides to local children and families who are affiliated with Make-A-Wish.

That night, a fundraising auction at Midtown Sundries will include autographed items from NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon, vacation packages and golf clubs.

The public is invited to the auction and to look over the 30-plus powerboats stationed near Midtown Sundries Friday night and Saturday morning. Those boats will participate in a “poker run” Saturday, where boats race based on chance, not speed.

“These are some of the most spectacular machinery you can see on the water,” said event organizer Joy Schou. “It should be a great atmosphere.”
