Believe it or not, South Carolina has now lost six straight SEC games. When coach
Steve Spurrier was signed to come to Columbia and resurrect the program, nobody was expecting this three games into his fourth season in charge.
Tommy Beecher of Concord, the quarterback Spurrier had planned to put in charge of the offense this season, struggled in the first two games - no TD passes and four interceptions in 10 offensive possessions - but was still listed as an either/or starter along with
Chris Smelley on the press box flip card. The problem was, Beecher actually was bothered by an infection all week, and according to Spurrier on pre-game radio, had lost 20 pounds.
The officiating crew had its problems, twice calling delay-of-game penalties that were then rescinded because of a malfunctioning playclock. Late in the first period, South Carolina intercepted a pass but that was nullified by defensive pass interference. The Gamecocks were then called for a block in the back penalty on the return of the interception.
The referee announced that there were “offsetting penalties,” which was difficult since both were called on South Carolina. So the group huddled again and finally got it right.
