Myers Park works to keep its streak

Aggressive offense leads to a 2nd-half rally that clinches the win over South Meck.

Myers Park High earned its perfect soccer streak Tuesday.

The Mustangs, ranked second in the state, staged a second-half rally to top South Mecklenburg 2-1 in a Southwestern 4A match at South.

Myers Park (12-0, 6-0) trailed No. 9 South Mecklenburg (11-3, 5-1) at the half, but turned the momentum with an aggressive offensive approach. Justin Davis' goal in the 76th minute provided the margin of victory.

“We talked about it 10 minutes before we jumped on the field,” Mustangs coach Bucky McCarley said. “Winning away at South Meck, as good as South Meck is, is going to be extremely difficult. Do not expect the refs to hand you anything, do not expect South Meck to hand you anything.”

Myers Park seized its opportunities in the final 40 minutes. Eric Suarez forced a tie in the 42nd minute when he beat a sliding South Meck defender to the ball for a goal. With time running out, Davis capped a long run right into a right-footed shot that found its mark to the left side of goal.

“When the ball was played to me, I didn't have complete control,” Davis said. “I took a couple of touches and then just passed it to the back of the net. It was pretty exciting.”

South Meck, which had its 10-game winning streak snapped, went in front on Billy Emmrich's tally in the 24th minute. Emmrich played a long pass from Alex Leonard and pushed the ball home to put Myers Park in a hole.

“We've talked about that scenario. That's not a surprise to us,” McCarley said. “Even though we've played well and been up in the majority of games, I guarantee you in a critical point in the season we're going to be down a goal, maybe in the playoffs, maybe against Providence or Ardrey Kell, and we'll find out how you respond to that adversity.”

Said Davis: “We're a team. As long as we work as a team, we're going to win games, and that's what we proved tonight.”
