Friday is the last day to register to vote in North Carolina. Well, sort of.
Anyone who wants to vote on Election Day – that's Nov. 4 – needs to register no later than Friday. But a recent change in state law will allow people to register and vote during early, one-stop voting, which begins Oct. 16 and ends Nov. 1.
So why should anyone worry about the Friday deadline?
Convenience, for one. Registering and voting during one-stop voting will take longer and elections officials are anticipating lines.
“Anyone who thinks they can go to these locations or even on Election Day and not have to wait longer than 15 minutes, somebody is fooling themselves,” said Johnnie McLean, a deputy director at the N.C. State Board of Elections.
To register, a person must be a U.S. citizen and 18 years old by Election Day.
In Mecklenburg County, you may pick up a form at any public library, at any town hall or at the Board of Elections office (741 Kenilworth Ave.), or print a form at www.meckboe.org.
Those who wait until early voting to register will need a driver's license or other proof of name and address, such as a utility bill, pay stub or bank statement. (Raleigh) News & Observer and Staff Reports
