Two young children who were trapped in a sports utility vehicle that overturned in a Lincoln County pond Tuesday night remained in critical condition Thursday at Carolinas Medical Center.
Taylor Peyton, 5, and John Peyton, II, 2, were riding in the vehicle with their mother, Chasity Spivey, 23, of Maiden, when the SUV ran off the road and flipped upside down into the water, authorities said.
Spivey died from her injuries Wednesday morning at Carolinas Medical Center.
First Sgt. J.T. Williams with the N.C. Highway Patrol said Spivey was driving behind her fiance, John Peyton, when she ran off Gladden Road north of Lincolnton around 8:40 p.m.
“He could see something was happening,” Williams said. “He could see her headlights leaving.”
Williams said excessive speed may have contributed to the accident. The investigating trooper estimated Spivey's speed at 50 mph, Williams said. The speed limit at the location is 25 mph.
About 25 volunteers took part in the rescue of Spivey, her son and daughter. Authorities said the victims had no pulses when they were removed from the SUV but were revived by CPR on the banks of the pond.
Services for Spivey will be held Saturday at noon at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Maiden. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. at the mortuary chapel.
