Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory may have failed in his bid for governor, but he did win support from one young voting bloc – kids.

With 90 percent of the vote counted, Mecklenburg County students overwhelmingly backed McCrory over Democrat Bev Perdue and Libertarian Michael Munger. Perdue won the actual election Tuesday.

More than 70,000 Mecklenburg kids voted Tuesday in a mock election staged by Kids Voting Mecklenburg.

The organization is a nonpartisan program meant to teach children about citizen participation. Kids voted at real polling sites and online.

The number of votes cast is a record for the 17-year-old group, far surpassing the 42,000 ballots cast during the presidential election in 2004.

“It's important for kids to be involved in the election,” said Amy Farrell, executive director. “Developing habits is important for kids.”
