Charlotte Catholic's best players were in top form Saturday.

Sutton Porter rang up four goals and teammate Donnie Smith added two in the Cougars' 6-0 win against Asheville in the N.C. 3A quarterfinals at Catholic.

The win, No. 1 Catholic's fifth straight, advances the Cougars (22-1-1) to the semifinals against Lake Norman.

“Those guys have been delivering all year – big game, small game, it doesn't much matter,” Catholic coach Oscar Del Pino said. “I can count on goal production from up top, even if they're sitting there watching all day long.”

Smith didn't need much time to get going against No. 9 Asheville, racking up the first tally in the opening minute and following with a second to give Catholic a 2-0 advantage.

Porter took over from there with a goal that pushed the Cougars' lead to three at the break and a second-half hat trick.

“Donnie finds a way and if it's not getting to the back of the net, it's finding a teammate, and Sutton had a heck of a game tonight,” Del Pino said. “He probably only got five looks at the frame, and he put four of them in the back of the net.”

Catholic, which had to battle past a second-half tie to against Forest View for a 3-2 win on Wednesday, didn't need a dramatic finish this time.

Crisp passing opened shooting lanes for Porter and Smith and the Cougars' defense limited (21-5-1) scoring opportunities for Asheville, which had its 14-game win streak snapped.

“What we're working on now is once we got up 2-0 the last two games and giving it right back,” Del Pino said.

“At 2-0, we weren't thinking we're going to control this game. We were thinking we've got to avoid the pitfalls we found in previous games.”
