ME-CA 7 honors N. Meck's Spano

North Mecklenburg High senior Kimberly Spano, who won the N.C. 4A girls' cross country championship, is the ME-CA 7 4A Runner of the Year. BraedonKoerwitz (Concord Robinson) is the conference boys' runner of the year.

Chris Campbell (Robinson) is the boys' coach of the year, and Lawrence Lawson (North Mecklenburg) is the girls' coach of the year.

The boys' all-conference team: Joe Rao (North Mecklenburg), Taylor Day, Collin Reber and Nick Shimko (Hopewell), Dominic Parisi, Hunter Weinke, Jake Eldridge, Chris Ramsey and Koerwitz (Robinson), Tadarrin Phronebarger (West Charlotte), and Aaron Prichard and Jacquis Harrison (Vance).

The girls' all-conference team: Megan Sullivan, Melissa Helms and Spano (North Mecklenburg), Emily Casey, Charlotte Ballentine, Stephanie Spain and Chaney Watson (Hopewell), Alyssa Lashway, Meaghan McCauley and Alex Hairfield (Robinson), and KaitlynShelter and Allie Gartland (Mallard Creek).

Basketball

Because of scheduling conflicts with football playoffs Friday, two games have been switched to today: North Mecklenburg at Garinger, and Vance at Berry.

Baseball

Four Ardrey Kell players signed with colleges Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period: catcher Taylor Patterson (Francis Marion), pitcher Alex Wood (Georgia), corner infielder Josh Case (Brevard) and outfielder Ryan Stetson (Appalachian State).

Mallard Creek sophomore Mikal Hill, who was second in the state with 37 steals and batted .342 last year, committed to South Carolina. He was all ME-CA 7 4A and helped Mallard Creek reach the playoffs.

Unionville Piedmont shortstop Jim Lylery, an all-South Piedmont 3A pick as a junior last year, committed to Charlotte. Lylery played in the for Region 6 team at the State Games last summer.

Boys' Soccer

Myers Park is chartering two buses for the N.C. 4A championship at 7 p.m. Saturday, at N.C. State's Curtis and Jackie Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh. Buses will leave school at 3 p.m. Cost for the bus ride and game ticket is $25. To register, contact Greg Clewis at g.clewis@cms.k12.nc.us.

Hopewell

Swimmer Amber Leiker, a senior, signed with North Carolina. She swam in the U.S. Olympic trials in July, and was N.C. 4A 200-yard freestyle champion and second in the 100 butterfly last year.

Kristi Giragosian, a senior outfielder in softball, signed with College of Charleston.

Girls' Tennis

Providence Day's Ryan Harper was named the U.S. Tennis Association North Carolina High School Coach of the Year.

Volleyball

North Mecklenburg's Kristen Livingston is the ME-CA 7 4A Player of the Year, and Rhonda Auman (Hopewell) is coach of the year.

The all-conference team: Ursula Saelzler (Central Cabarrus), Ali Cooke, Blair Atkinson and Livingston (North Meck), GinnyYoung and Kelsey Manning (Mallard Creek), Alex Kirk, Megan Wisehart and Chantelle Zenger (Concord Robinson), Kirstie Castaneira, Brie Livitzki and Chaniel Nelson (Hopewell), and Janah Turner (West Charlotte).

Cheerleading

Jamestown Ragsdale won the Carolina Cup, the top honor at the N.C. invitational cheerleading championships in Raleigh last weekend. Competition was based on the size of 115 teams.

Marvin Ridge won the super large varsity (22 or more members) division, and Charlotte Catholic was fifth. Hopewell won the medium varsity (13-16 members) division, followed by Providence and North Lincoln. Myers Park was fifth.

Cherryville won the large varsity (17-19 members) division, and South Caldwell was second. South Iredell was second in small varsity (five to 12 members). In super varsity (20-21 members), North Gaston was second and Weddington fourth.
