ST. LOUIS St. Louis running back Steven Jackson will not play Sunday against San Francisco because of his injured right thigh, and coach Jim Haslett said he won't even make the trip with the Rams (2-7).
Jackson did not practice Friday. By sitting out in San Francisco, he will have missed three of the past four games.
Antonio Pittman and Travis Minor will be the running backs. Pittman, who has been playing through a hamstring injury, has 40 yards on 23 carries in the past two games.
“He needs to break through and get a 100-yard game and show that he's a back who can play in this league for a long time,” Haslett said. “I've already told him that he needs to run his butt off.”
Jackson was hurt while landing awkwardly in the fourth quarter of a win against Dallas on Oct.19. He has 525 yards rushing, a 4.1-yard average and four touchdowns, and is tied for second on the team with 25 catches.
Elsewhere
CAROLINA: Center Ryan Kalil missed Friday's rain-induced indoor practice and is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against Detroit. He continues to recover from a sprained ankle that has forced him to miss three games plus most of last week's win in Oakland. Geoff Hangartner would start in Kalil's place.
The only other player listed on the injury report is defensive tackle Darwin Walker (neck), who practiced Friday and is listed as questionable.
CHICAGO: Quarterback Kyle Orton was listed as probable for the game Sunday in Green Bay. Orton sat out a 21-14 loss to Tennessee last week with a sprained right ankle. He was taken from the field on a cart late in the first half Nov.2 against Detroit. Orton is enjoying a breakout season with 1,777 yards and 10 touchdowns after beating former starter Rex Grossman in a preseason competition.
If Orton can't go against the Packers, Grossman will likely make his second straight start.
N.Y. GIANTS: Offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie was charged with drunken driving after a traffic stop Thursday. He was stopped after he cut through a gas station lot at 9:30p.m. according to Little Falls police. A Breathalyzer test found his blood-alcohol level was above New Jersey's legal limit of 0.08.
WASHINGTON: Running back Clinton Portis did not practice Friday and will be used only “in a limited fashion” if he is able to play Sunday night against Dallas. The NFL's second-leading rusher was able to watch practice – unlike Wednesday and Thursday, when his sprained left knee kept him away from the field — and was “getting some mental reps in case he has a chance to go,” according to coach Jim Zorn.
LYNCH RETIRES: Big-hitting safety John Lynch, 37, has decided to retire, officially ending his career with a news conference Monday in Tampa, Fla. Lynch, 37, was a nine-time Pro Bowler for Denver and Tampa Bay, finishing with 1,277 tackles, 100 pass breakups and 26 interceptions in 224 regular-season games.
He departed Denver on good terms in July and signed with the Patriots. He was cut two weeks later and has been out of the game since.
