Matthews commissioners have finalized plans for the South Trade Street widening, from the Weddington/Pleasant Plains intersection to Fullwood Lane.
Commissioners agreed Monday to $7.1 million in improvements, including:
A turn lane in front of the Matthews Athletic and Recreation Association and Chesney Glen, and a barrier and right-turn-only out of Courtney neighborhood.
Bicycles lanes and sidewalks on both sides of the road.
Expanding the right-of-way on the MARA side. Moving the field closest to the road.
Building the “Courtney Connector,” a $400,000-plus access road from Chaphyn Lane across MARA frontage.
Building a 140-space parking lot between the “Courtney Connecter” and South Trade Street
Creating a pedestrian tunnel under South Trade to continue the Four Mile Creek greenway.
Matthews Mayor Lee Myers acknowledged that completion of some items would depend on negotiations and funding availability.
“We may not be able to do all these things at once, but we need to move forward, said Myers.
