There was a three-paragraph item in Wednesday's Business section – under the tiny headline “Arena names booking agent” – that's worth another three paragraphs.
Here's the deal: Time Warner Cable Arena has hired a guy whose job will be to reel in big-name shows. It's a new post, and the guy (Glenn Grabski) will report to both the Bobcats and promoter AEG Live, which has been helping book arena events since last year.
I'm glad to see the arena making this kind of commitment, because clearly, Charlotte is still having problems getting respect. Three of the biggest announced upcoming tours chose to skip our city this year. The Dead and Bruce Springsteen are going to Greensboro; Mötley Crüe is Greenville, S.C.-bound.
Since I'm less into geezer rock (and there's more on the way, with Elton John/Billy Joel and Fleetwood Mac playing dates at TWC this spring), here's my wish list for Mr. Grabski: U2. Britney Spears. Kelly Clarkson. Beyonce. Taylor Swift. Land two of those five at the arena in 2009, and you'll be a winner in my book. Good luck.
