It’s days before your wedding, and you have just one detail to finalize before walking down the aisle. Today is the day you put the finishing touches on your groom’s wedding gift, one you are certain he will never forget. First, you have your hair and makeup done while enjoying a little champagne and cool jazz music. You slip into your favorite new lingerie as the photographer makes the final adjustments to the lights and props. This is not just another day in the life of the rich and famous. Today, you are the star in a fashion boudoir photography shoot.

The word “boudoir” is French for a lady’s bedroom or private sitting room. Just the meaning alone evokes thoughts of mystery, allure and intrigue. After all, who doesn’t want to know what is going on behind a lady’s bedroom door?

Years ago it was not uncommon for woman to commission an artist to paint her, but this luxury was often confined to the wealthy. In times of war, women would snap a shot of themselves and send it to their men overseas, reminding them of who was waiting at home.

Today, photographers like Critsey Rowe, owner of Couture Boudoir Photography, are introducing a modern, editorial style to the trend. This shift in artistic style is redefining what it means to be sexy, and women are taking a second look at the ageless trend of boudoir photography. One might hear the term and mistakenly associate it with the boas, fishnets and lollipops of yesteryear. But presently, the style captures beauty and allure in a sensual yet subtle way, with the use of implied nudity.

“Preparation for the session begins well before the camera is turned on,” says Rowe. “A client will decide the look they are after, considering their personality, style and comfort level. She may want to convey a particular fantasy or shoot an every-day around-the-house look, spicing it up with a slip showing or a lacy bra peeking out. Whatever her personality, our goal is to create a tasteful piece of art while having fun at the same time!”

Amanda Fox, who recently posed for a photo session with Kristin Vining, a Charlotte-based photographer and owner of Shh by Kristin Vining, says, “I thought it would be great to surprise my husband with something fun, and it was nice to be pampered for the day. I would encourage any woman to try it, even if it is just for yourself.”

Jenny Wunderlich thought boudoir photos looked like the kind of thing she’d find in fashion magazines and decided to give it a try. “After my shoot with Critsey Rowe, I couldn’t believe how beautiful I felt during the photo shoot. Then, after seeing the pictures I was absolutely amazed! I think every woman should do it because it does wonders for your self-esteem.”

When Jenny’s husband received his gift, he was quick to say his wife looked more stunning than ever. He even tried to strike a bargain, offering to buy Jenny more lingerie if she would do another session.

Much like the original pin-up girls, Colleen Orlando wanted to send some sexy photos to her husband who is serving in Iraq. But while other women may have had a Polaroid to send, Colleen had the luxury of a professional boudoir session with Critsey Rowe. “My husband was ecstatic to receive the pictures and proud of me for being comfortable with my body to confidently pose for the pictures. He is already discussing which photograph to blow up and hang over our bed when he returns. That detail is still up for discussion,” she laughs.

“Boudoir is a peaceful way to celebrate the art of the female body, incorporating romantic imagery, flair and fun,” explains Vining. “It’s certainly a surprise you or your groom will never forget.”
