While the groom knows why he’s at the wedding, the ushers and groomsmen may not have as clear a picture. Groomsmen are in the wedding party and stand with the groom. They throw the bachelor party, walk the bridesmaids back up the aisle, stand in the receiving line at the reception and may sit at the head table.

Ushers seat guests, escort guests of honor, and are available to dance with unescorted ladies at the reception. Ushers who are not groomsmen stand at the back during and after the ceremony, take down pew ribbons, and attend or co-host the bachelor party. They do not stand in the receiving line, but they may sit at the head table.
