Mike Rabinowitz isn't the type of person to sit around and wait for things to happen.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he says his family “was all cops.” For six months in 1986, he, his three brothers and their father were active police officers in New York City – quite a special feat.
Following a shoulder injury, Rabinowitz changed careers and went into the computer field. After being trained in customer service, he eventually went on to be a customer service trainer himself – traveling and giving seminars.
One day he was thinking about how much he liked his mother-in-law's Bundt cake, and decided to try his hand at baking. The cake turned out well, and an avocation was born.
Rabinowitz began experimenting with baking little cakes for gifts and treats. His recipients loved them and wanted more.
He bakes the cakes in a professional kitchen and has begun a side business.
People have been ordering the cakes for birthday parties and other events. The cakes can be bought singly at Anzi Pizza & Pasta in Stonecrest. For orders of four or more, the Web site is best for viewing and placing an order. That's www.bestbabycakes.net. Or e-mail Rabinowitz at email@example.com.
And if that weren't enough to keep Rabinowitz busy, he also enjoys going to “Star Trek” movies, bowls in a league and is appearing in the play “June 6th” for the Jewish Community Center.
Rabinowitz, who says he “hit the big 5-0 this December,” has been in Charlotte for 14 years. He and his wife, Cheryl, live in south Charlotte with their two children, Paige, and Matthew.
