This newcomer moved here to stay busy the entire year

People move to Charlotte for a host of reasons, and I recently heard one that was new to me.

“My wife wanted to keep me busy longer,” laughed Peter Stengel.

Stengel, the youngest of four, is from Smithtown, N.Y., and grew up an outdoor kind of guy.

“I was always skiing, golfing, or playing volleyball at the beach,” he said. His first job, at age 11, was picking up range balls at the public golf course three blocks from his house.

“I've always been in the golf business, and in New York it's pretty seasonal,” Stengel, 35, said.

He and his wife, Danielle, have friends who had moved to Charlotte and told them how great it was. That golf is a year-round sport here was the clincher.

Two years ago the Stengels moved to Mint Hill. Danielle's parents moved with them, and the two families set down roots. Stengel works in various capacities at Carmel Country Club and loves it. Danielle is in technology sales.

“My wife has the biggest heart,” Stengel said, “and she is good at everything she does.”

The Stengels love their neighborhood and have made great friends there.

“We watch football games together with our neighbors on Sundays,” Stengel said. “I'm a Giants fan. I like the Panthers, too, except when (the two teams) play each other.”

Daughter Abbey, almost 5, goes to preschool in Matthews, and they are expecting a new baby.

“Danielle's a doer and I'm a thinker, so we complement each other beautifully,” he said. “The move has been great for us, and we are happy to be raising our children in this environment.”
