Mike Haley, former CEO of a company that owned dozens of Charlotte-area McDonald restaurants, has donated $100,000 to help build a Ronald McDonald House in Charlotte.
Haley has a history of support for North Carolina's Ronald McDonald Houses – which currently are in Winston-Salem, Durham, Chapel Hill and Greenville. Construction is expected to begin in January for the Charlotte Ronald McDonald House, which will be on East Morehead Street, not far from the Levine Children's Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center and the Hemby Children's Hospital at Presbyterian Hospital.
The facility, which will house the families of hospitalized children, is expected to be completed by late 2010.
Haley served as president of the Ronald McDonald House Charities in North Carolina from 1993 to 2003 and headed Triton Management Company, which owned 60 McDonald's restaurants in the Charlotte region and were strong supporters of the Ronald McDonald House fund.
Haley, who grew up in Greensboro and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill, is now retired and living in Florida.
“Mr. Haley spent years promoting how an entire community benefits from having a RMH,” said Mona Johnson-Gibson, executive director of Charlotte's Ronald McDonald House. “He was inspirational in bringing a RMH to Durham, the first in the state, and now he's thrown his support behind bringing one to Charlotte.”
Charlotte is the only major U.S. city that does not have a Ronald McDonald House.
