Northwest Cabarrus

Book club: The Trojan Book Club, which is open to students and teachers, will meet every month through June. The club will meet Feb. 4, March 4, April 1, May 6 and June 3. Details: nchsbookclub.pbworks.com.

Golf tournament: The second annual golf tournament will be held March 6 at Crescent Country Club in Salisbury. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and tee-off is at noon. $55 per person; $210 for a foursome. Fee includes 18 holes of golf, riding card and a chance to win prizes. Cox Mill High School

Help students: The Academic Booster Club is made up of dedicated parents and community members who believe in the power of academics to transform lives. The purpose of the clubs is to motivate students to do their best and recognize their achievements. ABC membership makes a difference. The club relies on annual memberships to fund much of its activities. Your tax-deductible donation is welcome any time during the year. If you would like to join, obtain a membership form from the school and mail it with a $10 check made payable to: CMHS-Academic Booster Club, 1355 Cox Mill Rd., Concord, NC 28027.

Cox Mill Elementary School

Art on display: Forty-three fifth-grade students at Cox Mill Elementary School were chosen to have their artwork on display in the student gallery at the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte. The students' artwork is based on the work of artist Lois Mailou Jones, a prominent Harlem Renaissance artist. The Mint Museum of Art is featuring a retrospective exhibit of Jones' work titled: Lois Mailou Jones: A Life in Vibrant Color, which showcases 70 of her paintings. CCS students' artwork will be on display at the museum through Jan. 31.

Mount Pleasant

Helping out: The AWSUM Club spent the day after Christmas feeding the needy in Charlotte. A special "Thank You" goes out to Ms. McCorkle's Foods classes for spending time baking lasagna for those in need. The AWSUM Club used $300 to buy food and supplies - this money came from the fundraisers our community donates to the club and its mission to help. If you are interested in contributing funds to causes such as this, please e-mail michael.landers@cabarrus.k12.nc.us and let us know how you would like to help.

Kindergarten Registration

Begins in April: Cabarrus County Schools will hold registration for students who will enter kindergarten in the fall of 2010 beginning April 19 and continuing through April 23. Each school will have its own registration schedule.

Hickory Ridge High School

Each month the faculty and staff vote for the Team Member of the Month based on Hickory Ridge's set of core values. For the month of January, English Teacher Cherie Ashe was chosen. Here is what one staff member said of Ashe: "She promotes positive attitude change through her work with Tearing Down the Walls and by coordinating Freshmen Transition Camp. Mrs. Ashe believes that all students can be successful in high school."

Spelling Bee champs

On to the next round: Tackling words like "aggrandizement, rutabaga, omniscient and igneous" the top spellers for Cabarrus County Schools took to the stage to compete for the title of CCS Spelling Bee Champion for 2010. Spelling bee winners from each CCS elementary and middle school participated in the event, which was held Jan. 7 at Concord Middle School. The 2010 CCS Spelling Bee Champion is Lindsay Horne a seventh-grader at J.N. Fries Middle School. Kelsie King , a fifth-grader at Harrisburg Elementary School was first runner-up. Lindsay will represent Cabarrus County Schools in The Observer's 56th Annual Regional Spelling Bee on March 15. The winner of the regional bee will go on to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in June.

Concord High

Pancake breakfast: Concord High School Athletic Boosters is hosting a pancake breakfast 8 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Feb. 13 at Applebee's on Concord Parkway. Tickets are $5 and available in advance at 704-361-3394.
