Once a year in January, Cub Scouts get together for a rite of passage in the Pinewood Derby competition.
Mecklenburg County's Pack 94, all home schooled boys age 6-11, gathered at Joe Gibbs Racing recently. This was the first time the annual derby has held at Gibbs Racing. Each Scout spent about a month constructing their four-wheeled vehicles. The gravity powered cars weighed in at a maximum of 5 ounces. It couldn't be more than 7 inches in length, or wider than 2.75 inches. The boys were divided into groups titled Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos. Each participant was allowed to race their car six times.Everything was quiet in the race shop. However, loud screams and cheers were in abundance in the conference room. The computerized scoring system averaged the times for each car. 1st place went to Benjamin Speed, 7, grandson of former NASCAR driver Lake Speed. In February the Pack holds their annual Blue and Gold Banquet. They also hold regular meetings at University Hills Baptist Church in Charlotte.Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010
