Observations from the Smith Center

By Luke DeCock
Staff writer

CHAPEL HILL • With the crowd only about two-thirds of usual because of the inclement weather, the public-address announcer invited those in attendance to fill the empty seats at the first TV timeout, resulting in a mass exodus from the Smith Center’s upper bowl.

• There’s a lot to like about what Tony Bennett has done in his brief time at Virginia, and given his record, a lot more to expect in the future. But while the suit-and-open-collar look is perfect for boarding an NBA charter, perhaps he might find a tie appropriate once in a while -- maybe for a national TV game against the defending national champions?

• With Marcus Ginyard still clearly not 100 percent, Roy Williams tried using Will Graves and John Henson to guard Virginia scorer Sylven Landesberg, to no avail. Landesberg had 16 of Virginia’s first 32 points on 8-for-11 shooting.

• Before the fans were invited to move down, Ginyard dove into the stands along the baseline after a loose ball, tumbling over a cheerleader and into a pair of unoccupied seats -- a situation where he could have used a couple bodies in those seats to cushion his fall.
