CMS makeup day is Feb. 15
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will make up for Monday’s snow-and-ice closing by holding school Feb. 15 – and there won’t be excused absences for families who had made plans, officials said today.
The district approves makeup days in advance as part of its annual calendar. Superintendent Peter Gorman says he hopes to dodge further weather closings, because the next makeup on tap is Memorial Day.
Last year, some families objected to holding school on Memorial Day to make up for closings. Officials said they’d try to avoid that by scheduling more makeup days, but six of this year’s 12 days had already passed by the time the area’s first winter storm hit. After Memorial Day, any snow days will start cutting into spring break.
At a news briefing on weather closings, Gorman added a tongue-in-cheek tribute to a new data source: CharlotteObserver.com’s poll on whether to close schools. He said he checked it periodically on Sunday: “I’d go in and see which way the wind was blowing. I got a kick out of that.”
He said the pro-closing camp had a strong lead, but “I think kids stacked the vote.” The real reason behind the decision to close Monday, he said, was that the forecast for low overnight temperatures made it nearly certain that melting roads would re-ice by morning.
The delayed starts and early dismissals that some nearby districts use aren’t practical for CMS, which has 137,000 students (including prekindergarteners) and a complex bus schedule that spans most of the day.
