Fundraiser focuses on lung cancer

Bo and Christi Johnson knew how to face adversity.

Bo, a life long nonsmoker, was diagnosed in May 2006 with Stage 4 lung cancer. He endured several clinical research trials, six rounds of chemotherapy and two lung transplants.

In the wake of these numerous trials and treatments at Duke University Hospital, Bo and his family realized that the funding for lung cancer research was at a severe deficit.

The Johnsons teamed up to help fight cancer.

Together, starting in September 2006, they founded Addi's Cure, Inc., a nonprofit organization with the focus of raising money specifically for lung cancer research and education. The Johnsons aimed to educate others regarding the misconceptions of lung cancer and hoped to raise money to help find a cure.

Bo felt that no child should have to grow up without a father.

Addi's Cure is named after Bo and Christi's daughter, Addison. Half of the foundation's proceeds go to Duke University Medical Center, specifically for lung cancer research. The remaining 50 percent goes into an interest-account with the earnings going directly to cancer research.

On Dec. 5 of last year, Bo lost his fight against lung cancer. His daughter, Addi, was only 4 years old.

On Feb. 27, Addi's Cure, Inc. will host "Beating the Odds," a silent action, casino-themed fundraiser. It will be held at Raceworld USA, home of Michael Waltrip in Cornelius. The event will be from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased at the door. Proceeds are tax deductible.

Players will receive $25,000 in play chips to try their luck on the black jack and craps tables.

Winning chips will be exchanged for tickets and a chance to win prizes.

Donated items include: paintings, teeth whitening systems, several autographed items, a Rock Barn golf and brunch outing, photography gift packages, numerous salon and restaurant gift certificates, gym memberships, a Yacht Club Social membership and real estate license classes. While playing, gamers can enjoy food and a cash bar.
