The area saw a high level of wrestling competition this year, but Lake Norman was simply dominant this season, winning nearly everything they could.

The Wildcats won a school-record 33 matches this season on their way to winning the first I-Meck regular-season championship and the conference's tournament. They also took the 4A West Regional Championship back to Mooresville for the first time in school history.

The only big disappointment for Wildcats, which only had five losses this season, came when they lost in the 4A Dual Team Championship quarterfinals against Davie County last month.

Hopewell finished 15th at regionals while rivals North Mecklenburg wrapped up their season two spots below at 17th. Both the Titans and the Vikings had down seasons, finishing fifth and sixth at the I-Meck Conference wrestling tournament respectively.

SouthLake Christian was the only private school in the area to rank at the NCISAA Wrestling Championships, finishing 10th.

On the other side of the lake, East Lincoln had an good season a year after losing 10 of their 14 starters to graduation. The Mustangs finished second in the 1A/2A Southern Piedmont Conference tournament behind West Lincoln.

Wrestler of the Year: Harrison Honeycutt, Lake Norman.

Harrison Honeycutt hasn't lost a match in two years.

After winning the 3A state championship as a 189-pounder, Honeycutt has continued his dominance even after moving up weight classes and to 4A.

Wrestling at 215 pounds this season, Honeycutt went into last weekend's 4A state championships with a 46-0 record. This season, Honeycutt won the I-Meck 215-pound championship as well as the title at regionals, where he recorded his 100th straight win.

Honeycutt has won every tournament he's been in this season and led the Wildcats to the I-Meck conference title - the school's first ever conference crown - by defeating cross-town rivals Mooresville in the regular season finale.

With another year of high school left, Honeycutt could grow even more dominant and climb up national rankings.

Coach of the Year: Saul Sheck, East Lincoln.

After losing 10 starters from last year's 16-8 team that made the Mustangs' first playoff appearance since 1993, Saul Sheck was able to push his young Mustangs to a 16-3 record this season.

Sheck admitted that he had low expectations for his team when the season began.

"I was hoping that we would win 2 matches - maybe 3 matches," he said.

But he didn't let that affect his coaching. The Mustangs beat teams they weren't supposed to, including some 3A and 4A teams.

Scheck's team barely missed making the 2A dual team championships because the 1A/2A Southern Piedmont Conference only has one automatic bid, which went to perennial wrestling powerhouse West Lincoln.

103 pounds - Cody Kerns, Lake Norman: Won 4A West Regional championship.

112 pounds - Tanner Russ, North Mecklenburg: Finished second in the I-Meck tournament.

119 pounds - Joe Acquaruio, Hopewell: Senior won the I-Meck championship and finished second at regionals.

125 pounds - James Blew, Lake Norman: Second at I-Meck tournament.

130 pounds - Tanny Tito, Hopewell: Titan senior captain finished second at I-Meck Tournament.

135 pounds - Joey DiDonato, North Mecklenburg: The junior is the Vikings' only state qualifier after finishing third at regionals.

140 pounds - Jordan Handy, East Lincoln: Standout wrestler who won the 2A regional championship

145 pounds - Mike Hayes, Lake Norman: Finished second at both the 4A West Regional and the I-Meck tournament.

152 pounds - Josh Smith, Lake Norman: Wildcat wrestler won the regional championship.

160 pounds - Matt Cancellieri, Hopewell: Finished third at I-Meck championship and went 2-2 at regionals.

171 pounds - Hunter Dowless, Lake Norman: Junior won I-Meck title.

189 pounds - Collin Foster, Lake Norman: I-Meck Tournament champion and finished second at regionals

215 pounds - Harrison Honeycutt, Lake Norman: Dominated his opponents all season long on his way to his 100th consecutive win.

285 pounds - Jackson Dowless, Lake Norman: Second at I-Meck Tournament.
