Smoke is obscuring visibility in the Charlotte area this evening, but fire officials say it’s nothing to be alarmed about.
As is the case every spring, the S.C. Forestry Service is conducting a controlled burn, says Charlotte fire Capt. Rob Brisley. A south-southwest wind this evening is carrying the smoke into the Charlotte region.
Smoke was being reported at 6 p.m. at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, cutting the visibility to 4 miles. There were no reports of smoke at nearby airports in Rock Hill, Monroe and Gastonia, where visibility ranged from 9 to 10 miles.
Brisley said Charlotte-area residents can expect smoke and haze during the evening hours. The smoke could cause some breathing problems for those with asthma or other chronic respiratory ailments, and people experiencing problems should stay indoors.
