McColl, Gantt centers to share creative director

In a rare linkup between two Charlotte cultural groups, the McColl Center for Visual Art and the Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture will share a creative director and collaborate on art projects.

Ce Scott, the McColl Center's director of residencies and exhibitions, will oversee programming at the McColl and Gantt centers beginning July 1. Scott has served on the McColl staff since the center's founding a decade ago.

"Art has a natural way of bringing people and ideas together," McColl President Suzanne Fetscher said in a statement. The alliance with Gantt expands "the educational and programming initiatives that we are both doing - showcasing how art and artists can be catalysts for social advancement."

The first collaboration will be a fall residency by Atlanta-based artist Fahamu Pecou. In his paintings, video and performances, Pecou looks at popular culture's "obsession with celebrity, our exploitation of black masculinity and the divide that racial ignorance and stereotypes perpetuate," he says on his website, www.fahamupecouart.com.

Pecou's work has been exhibited across the United States and in Europe and South Africa.

A second artist, yet to be named, will work at the two centers this winter. That artist and Pecou will have a joint exhibition at the Gantt in summer 2011.
