No team sat atop the Sweet 16 this season as long as East Rowan, and after winning Rowan County's first state title in 15 years, the Mustangs are Sweet 16 champions.
East Rowan finished 31-2 and beat Wilson Hunt 2-0 in the N.C. 3A championship series earlier this month in Zebulon.
East Rowan finishes just ahead of N.C. 2A champ East Rutherford (30-2), which won the N.C. 2A state title 2-0 in its championship series over Graham.
East Rutherford lost in the 2008 finals and lost in the third round of the playoffs in 2009.
