Wilkinson is repeat player of the year

Alexander Central pitcher Chelsea Wilkinson repeats as All-Observer softball player of the year.

The Observer annually names a team of the top players from its 125-school coverage area in North and South Carolina (All-Observer) as well as a team made up of the top Mecklenburg County players (All-Mecklenburg) and the top players outside Mecklenburg (All-Region).

Wilkinson is All-Region player of the year as well.

As a freshman last year, Wilkinson was 31-1 for the N.C. 4A state champions. She had an 0.41 ERA and 358 strikeouts in 191 innings. Her sophomore year was just as good. She was 27-2 with an 0.37 ERA and 349 strikeouts in 172 innings. She led Alexander Central to a national ranking and a third round playoff berth.

Wilkinson, who carries a 3.99 GPA, also hit .333 with 27 RBIs.

Wilkinson was also picked as the Gatorade N.C. player of the year.

The All-Observer coach of the year is Hickory Grove's Roger Woodell, whose team won its fifth straight N.C. Independent Schools 3A state title. Hickory Grove hasn't lost a conference game in two years.

2010 All-Observer Softball Team

P: Chelsea White , East Rowan, Jr: 23-1 with 0.525 ERA; 222 strikeouts and 18 walks. White led her team to 3A state semifinals; also hit .481 with 3 HR and 34 RBIs

P: Bailey Smith , Boiling Springs Crest, Sr.: Led team to 3A state finals. Hit .410 with 8 HR and 33 RBIs. Big South Conference player of the year was 22-1 with 0.48 ERA, 245 strikeouts.

P: Chelsea Wilkinson , Alexander Central, So.: two-time Northwestern conference player of the year is N.C. Gatorade player of the year. Was 27-2 with 349 strikeouts in 172 innings. Hit .333 with 27 RBIs. Repeats as Observer player of the year.

C: Sarah Mooney , North Mecklenburg, Jr: I-Meck player of the year is three-time all-conference pick and two-time all-state selection. Mooney has committed to James Madison.

C: Lauren Elder , Alexander Central, So.: Region 7 player of the year hit .438 with 36 RBIs and had 10 stolen bases. Only two players stole a base against Alexander this season.

INF/OF: Katie Carpenter , Catawba Bandys Jr: Second baseman led the team with .449 batting average, had 12 doubles, 24 RBIs and scored 29 times. She was 8-0 as a pitcher with 1.80 ERA. Three time all-region pick.

INF/OF: Nicole Helms , Marshville Forest Hills, Sr.: Rocky River player of the year hit .542 with 33 RBIs and 37 runs scored. Shortstop had 11 stolen bases, seven doubles, five triples and four HR.

INF/OF: Ericka Nesbitt , East Rowan, Jr.: Shortstop helped team reach regional championship game; hit .592 with 24 RBIs and 3 homers. Scored 41 runs and stole 32 bases.

UT: Lexi Davis , Indian Trail Porter Ridge, So.: Two-time conference player of the year, committed to Auburn, hit .465 with 7 HR, 29 RBIs. Was 19-3 as pitcher with 215 strikeouts and 0.239 ERA, six no-hitters and 10 shutouts.

UT: Chelsea Macaluso , Hickory Grove, Jr.: Repeat first team pick, was 20-3 as a pitcher with a .080 ERA. She led her team to a fifth straight state title. All-state pick hit .379
