On the second play of Friday's football game against Charlotte Catholic, Providence removed quarterback Chauncey Concepcion from the game and tried a direct snap to a running back.

The ball sailed over Justin Askew's head for a 14-yard loss and a turnover.

For Providence, it was only a sign of bad things to come.

The Panthers had five first-half turnovers and six total during Friday's 38-13 loss. It was Providence's worst defeat since losing 45-7 to Butler in November 2008.

Providence has lost its first two games for the past four seasons.

Catholic is 2-0 for the second straight year.

"They really had a lot of bad breaks and Murphy's law got them," said Catholic coach Jim Oddo. "It was them shooting themselves in the foot. You get bad days.

"We've had it the other way around, too. We know what it's like and we have empathy for them....But not enough to switch places."

Catholic (2-0) didn't score on its first possession, which began at Providence's 14, but it did score on its second, which began at Providence's 30.

Down 7-0, the Panthers drove to the Catholic 2, but the Cougars blocked a field goal and Matt Cincotta picked the ball up and ran 85 yards for a touchdown.

Providence's next three possessions resulted in two more turnovers, which resulted in two more Catholic scores: Steven Bevilacqua (16 carries, 80 yards, three touchdowns) scored twice in 16 seconds. The Cougars led 28-0.

Providence's highlight came on the next play from scrimmage. Concepcion, who finished with 150 yards rushing and 215 passing, threw a 77-yard scoring pass to Alex Blackwell. By then, the teams had scored three times in 35 seconds.

But Providence was down 28-7 and never got closer.

Catholic finished with 221 yards rushing and 50 yards passing. Providence had six fumbles (four lost), two interceptions and four 15-yard penalties.

"It just wasn't their night," Oddo said.
