Gaston animal shelter expands hours

The Gaston County Animal Shelter begins operating under extended hours Wednesday, county officials say.

The shelter will be open until 6 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday – an hour longer than previously. The extra hour is a trial run, and county officials say they will review the decision in October, to see if it is worth the investment.

New shelter hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month.

“We’ve received numerous suggestions from folks, regarding extending operating hours to allow traditional first-shift workers an opportunity to adopt pets,” Animal Control Administrator Reggie Horton said. “We are hopeful this effort will equate to increased animal adoptions.”

The shelter is at 220 Leisure Lane, in Dallas.
