Cardinals shopping QB Leinart?

The Buffalo Bills, Oakland Raiders and New York Giants have had discussions about trading for Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart, league sources told ESPN.

Leinart and the Cardinals are tiring of each other and as each day passes, many believe a trade of Leinart, who is unhappy that he's not starting, is more likely with roster moves coming this weekend, sources said.

One executive told ESPN.com's Mike Sando the Cardinals were calling around, trying to gauge the market for Leinart.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt has decided to start Derek Anderson instead of Leinart in tonight's exhibition finale - the second straight game Whisenhunt has tabbed Anderson as the starter instead of Leinart, who was widely expected to claim the job after Kurt Warner retired.

That decision followed a meeting between Leinart and Whisenhunt Monday afternoon, after the former Heisman Trophy winner told reporters he had outplayed Anderson in training camp and preseason, and that his problem with his coach "probably goes beyond football."

Buffalo is unlikely to make a trade for Leinart because the Bills are uncomfortable about bringing aboard his contract, which carries a $2.485million base salary this season and balloons to $7.36million next season.

The Raiders denied interest in Leinart on Wednesday, saying in a statement they have never discussed acquiring him and they are "very happy" about their quarterback situation with starter Jason Campbell.

Around the league

MINNESOTA: Once again, Brett Favre has stolen the show in Minnesota and relegated the backup quarterbacks to irrelevance.

Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels are still unproven, one big reason the Vikings pursued Favre so hard to play for a second straight year.

Jackson and Rosenfels have each kept most of any frustration to themselves, but they're both also confident they're good enough to start. The only way to get better is to play, and that won't happen unless Favre misses a game.

The Vikings also have a dilemma this weekend, whether to keep rookie Joe Webb for four quarterbacks on the roster or try to slip him on the practice squad or trade one of the backups.

ST. LOUIS: Sam Bradford is ready to show his first start was not a fluke.

After playing like a rookie quarterback in the first two exhibitions, Bradford got a chance to start last week in New England and played like the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

He'll get another chance to do that tonight when the Rams host Baltimore.

Bradford got his shot to play with the starters when A.J. Feeley went down with an injured right thumb.

No decision has been made as to whether Bradford will start when the Rams open the regular season against Arizona.

Typically, coaches play the first team only a series or two. But rookie QBs are sometimes looked at differently.

WASHINGTON: The Redskins have signed quarterback John Beck to a two-year contract extension.

The move Wednesday puts Beck under contract through the 2012 season and appears to solidify his spot on the roster as the third-string quarterback. He had been competing with Richard Bartel for the No. 3 spot behind Donovan McNabb and Rex Grossman.

UMPIRES MOVE: The NFL will move umpires back to their old spots during the final five minutes of tonight's exhibitions.

Previously they were in the old spot for only the final two minutes of each half.

League officials decided to move umpires from the old spot, in the middle of the defense, to behind the deepest running back for safety reasons. But Peyton Manning complained about the switch after being called twice for illegal snaps when the umpire couldn't get into position quickly enough last week at Green Bay.

The NFL will again re-evaluate the new policy after this week's exhibition finales. ONS
